New CSCR Book Investigates Impact Of B2B Internet Tools On Supply Chain Processes

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA -- A team of researchers from Manugistics, Inc. and the Center for Supply Chain Research (CSCR) at Penn State’s Smeal College of Business recently published “eBusiness and Supply Chain Processes,” a book about the impact of business-to-business Internet tools on supply chain processes.

The project timeline for “eBusiness and Supply Chain Processes” spanned the boom to bust of the Internet economy, allowing insights into the evolution of many eBusiness concepts and ideas. Focus groups, interviews, a survey, and a series of case studies were utilized during the research effort, which was conducted for the Supply Chain Council, an organization of leading industrial, logistics, and distribution, and supply-chain application software companies.

Through the course of the project, the book’s authors found that the average adoption rate of eBusiness capabilities falls short of 50 percent.

“There still is an opportunity for many companies to further improve their supply chain processes,” the book states. “While lots of low-hanging fruit has been picked through e-procurement and the development of customer and supplier self-service portals, potentially higher payoff collaborative capabilities have not been adapted as widely.”

Dr. Doug Thomas, Assistant Professor of Business Logistics and CSCR Faculty Affiliate, led the research. Other CSCR personnel and members of the principal research team include Dr. Skip Grenoble, Executive Director, CSCR; Sue Purdum, Administrative Director, CSCR; and Roberta Miller and Scott Gaston, CSCR Research Assistants. Dr. Dawn Russell, Assistant Professor of Business Logistics, Dr. Anne Hoag, Assistant Professor of Telecommunications and Dr. Don Warsing, Assistant Professor of Business Logistics, made important contributions as Faculty Affiliates.
