Academy of Management Journal Names Smeal College Professor as New Associate Editor

An associate professor of management in Penn State's Smeal College of Business has been appointed as associate editor to one of the top empirical journals in the management field.

The Academy of Management Journa l recently announced Dr. Donald D. Bergh's appointment as associate editor effective July 1, 2001. Bergh is in the Department of Management and Organization in Smeal College.

" The Academy of Management Journal is one of the very top empirical journals in management. This invitation to serve as associate editor represents recognition of the quality of Professor Bergh's strategic management research and his reviewing abilities," says Linda K. TreviƱo, The Franklin H. Cook Fellow in Business Ethics and Chair of the Department of Management and Organization.

The Academy of Management Journal (AMJ) is a publication of the Academy of Management. The AMJ presents cutting edge research that provides readers with a forecast for new management thoughts and techniques. The Academy of Management is a professional society composed of professors who conduct research and teach management in colleges, universities or research institutes and doctoral students. Members also include management consultants and managers from a variety of business settings. The purpose of the Academy is to foster the general advancement of research, learning, teaching and practice in the management field. The Academy publishes scholarly papers, conducts forums for the exchange of management knowledge, and provides services that enhance the science and practice of management.

Bergh has been at Smeal College since the fall semester of 1990, where he has taught courses on strategic management, mergers & acquisitions, research methods and business and society. He is the author of articles on diversification strategy, boundaries of the firm, determinants of acquisition outcomes and restructuring actions. In addition to his work on strategy, he also studies applications of research methods, particularly those involving longitudinal designs.

His most recent research examines international acquisitions, applications of network perspectives to explain diversification, the long-term performance records of spin-offs and the role of time in transaction costs.
