UNIVERSITY PARK, PA (August 19, 2008) – Ron Johnson, communication and leadership instructor in Penn State's Master of Manufacturing Management (MMM) degree program, recently addressed the Space Coast Section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) in Melbourne, Fla.

Johnson was invited to the professional development conference to lead a session on leadership after the event's organizers heard him speak at the 2007 SWE National Conference in November in Nashville, Tenn.

At the Florida event, Johnson spoke to about 150 professional engineers working on the Space Shuttle Program in an interactive session that focused on how to become a complete professional. He provided attendees with a leadership blueprint and explained how professionals who have the right technical and functional skills can develop their leadership skills to take their career to the next level. Using conversation, games, and competency analysis, Johnson shared a set of skills and actions capable of being implemented immediately by attendees to develop their leadership ability.

Johnson shares his leadership expertise regularly at professional conferences around the country, speaking to business professionals and students. As communication and leadership instructor at Penn State, he is responsible for developing the leadership skills of graduate students seeking an MMM degree. He has worked with more than 1,000 students from 60 countries during the 12 years of MMM at Penn State.

Johnson joined the Penn State faculty in 1993 and holds a joint appointment in the Smeal College of Business and the College of Engineering. He teaches the Leadership, Communication, and Career Development course and serves as leadership consultant to many of the world's best-known corporations. In addition, Johnson has visited more than 200 manufacturing facilities around the country and he regularly hosts manufacturing leaders at Penn State.
