Smeal Advances In Latest U.S. News Ranking Of MBA Programs

Penn State's Smeal College of Business rose four spots to 34th overall and 17th among publicly supported business schools in this year's edition of U.S. News & World Report's "America’s Best Graduate Schools," out today. The publication also ranks Smeal sixth in the nation in the discipline-specific category of Supply Chain/Logistics. Smeal advanced in this year's rankings from its positions last year of 18th among publics, 38th overall, and seventh in Supply Chain/Logistics.

Steelers President Rooney, Other Executives To Discuss Business Side Of Sports At Smeal

Penn State's Smeal College of Business and Dickinson School of Law will host several executives from the sports industry—including Art Rooney II, president of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Ernie Accorsi, former general manager of the New York Giants, and Chris Bevilacqua, founder of CSTV—for a two-part event exploring the economic, financial, and management aspects of the sports industry. Get in the Game: The Sports Business in America Today begins at 11:15 a.m. on April 20 in Smeal's Struthers Auditorium on Penn State's University Park campus.

Smeal To Host 'Executive MBA Spotlight' Program In Philadelphia

The Penn State Smeal College of Business Executive MBA Program in Philadelphia is partnering with the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce in a new initiative, Executive MBA Spotlight, a program series created specifically for senior executives in the Greater Philadelphia region. The inaugural program, "Applying the Tools and Techniques of Leading Companies to Reach Your Leadership Potential," will be held on April 19 at 8 a.m. at the Union League of Philadelphia.

Smeal Alum To Deliver Jacobs Retail Lecture

Smeal College of Business alumnus Joseph Solimando '81 MBA, senior vice president, global operations and technology, and chief information officer of Disney Consumer Products, will deliver the Melvin Jacobs Retail Leadership Lecture at 11:15 a.m. on April 26 in the Business Building's Struthers Auditorium.

Xerox Awards QMM Program A Third $25,000 Grant

The Xerox Foundation has awarded a $25,000 grant to Penn State's Quality and Manufacturing Management (QMM) Program. It's the third time in three years that the foundation has made such a contribution to the program. A portion of each of the Xerox grants is used to recruit talented students into the QMM program as Xerox Fellows. The grants also provide scholarship support to current QMM students to attend the Lean Six Sigma seminar as a capstone to the MMM degree.

MBA Auction To Raise Funds For THON

The MBA Association at Penn State's Smeal College of Business will hold its fourth annual Smeal MBA Auction to Benefit THON at 7 p.m. on March 30 in the Atrium of the Business Building. The event will feature a silent and live auction for items including two Penn State-Notre Dame football tickets, autographed sports memorabilia, and the use of a beach house in South Bethany Beach, Del. All proceeds from the auctions will go to the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, which raises money for the Four Diamonds Fund to combat pediatric cancer.

Ten Smeal Undergrads To Compete For Title Of 'The Next CEO'

Weeks of research and studying will culminate for 10 Smeal College of Business students as they take the stage at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel on April 23 to compete in the college's unique chief-executive simulation challenge, The Next CEO. The contestants will have to think on their feet, posing as CEOs of multibillion-dollar global corporations to answer questions about how their companies should respond to complex business crises and major world events.

Smeal Instructor's Radio Talk Show Moves To Drive Time

"Speaking Confidentially," a State College-area radio program hosted by Kenneth Pasch, instructor in accounting and management at Penn State's Smeal College of Business, is moving to 8 a.m. on Wednesdays beginning March 28. The hourlong program, which Pasch started in September, airs on 970 WBLF-AM.

Penn State Researchers Testing Futures Markets For Weather Forecasting

Economists at Penn State's Smeal College of Business and College of Earth and Mineral Sciences are testing whether futures markets can be used to accurately forecast the weather, and, so far, they've found the markets to be just as accurate as major forecasting services.

Smeal Executive Insights Series To Host Ernst & Young CEO James Turley

Penn State's Smeal College of Business will host James Turley, chairman and chief executive officer of the Ernst & Young global organization, on March 27 as part of the college's new guest speaker series, Leadership In Focus: Executive Insights. Turley will join Smeal Dean James Thomas for an on-stage conversation at 11:15 a.m. in the Business Building's auditorium, during which Thomas will pose questions submitted by students and faculty in the audience.

May Memorial Set For Eugene Kelley, Smeal Dean Emeritus

Together with his family, the Smeal College of Business will host a memorial service in May for Eugene Kelley, dean emeritus of Smeal. Family, friends, colleagues, and former students of Kelley's are invited to attend the service at 10 a.m. on May 17 in the Helen Eakin Eisenhower Chapel on Penn State's University Park campus. A reception will follow at noon in the Paquerilla Spiritual Center's Garden Room. Kelley, Smeal's second dean and a pioneering scholar in the field of marketing management, passed away Feb. 10 at age 84.

BusinessWeek Ranks Smeal 14th Among Public Undergrad Programs, Sixth According To Recruiters

In its second annual ranking of U.S. undergraduate business programs, BusinessWeek magazine, has ranked Penn State's Smeal College of Business 14th among public schools, fifth in the Big Ten, and 36th overall nationally. In the recruiter survey, which accounts for 20 percent of the overall ranking, Smeal ranked sixth nationally. Recruiters were asked to identify the schools with the best graduates, most innovative curricula, and most effective career services.

Smeal MBA Career Coach Pens Book On Sales Myths And Strategy

A new book by Arnold Tilden, a career coach in the MBA Program at Penn State's Smeal College of Business, exposes four myths that dominate the sales profession and impede sales efforts. The book provides a roadmap for companies and salespeople to stop relying on mythology and refocus their resources on strategy, structure, and people.

Supply Chain Professor Wins International Case Study Award

Daniel Guide, associate professor of operations and supply chain management at Penn State's Smeal College of Business, along with his colleague Luk Van Wassenhove of France's INSEAD, has won the 2007 European Case Award for best teaching case study in production and operations management. The European Case Clearing House (ECCH), the world's leading provider of case studies, presented the award to Guide and Van Wassenhove for their case entitled "Managing Product Returns at Hewlett-Packard."

Smeal Associate Dean Edits Book On SMEs In The Global Economy

A new book edited by Gerald I. Susman, associate dean for research and director of the Center for the Management of Technological and Organizational Change (CMTOC) at Penn State's Smeal College of Business, explores the challenges and opportunities that face small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) competing in the world economy. Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and the Global Economy, published by Edward Elgar Publishing Inc., will be released in April.

Research Center Name Change Reflects Evolving Digital Business Environment

The eBusiness Research Center at Penn State's Smeal College of Business has changed its name to the Center for Digital Transformation to more accurately reflect its focus on the continually evolving impact of information and communications technologies on global business. The function of the research center, to further research, teaching, and outreach to help businesses realize the challenges and opportunities presented by the digital economy, remains the same.
