University Honors Smeal Student Groups With Multiple AwardsUNIVERSITY PARK, PA (April 14, 2008) – Penn State's Center for Student Engagement presented its Student Leadership and Service Awards this month, and student groups from the Smeal College of Business won five out of the six awards presented to groups. The Black Male Leadership Symposium, a Smeal student organization that seeks to foster unity and stability among black males in the college, earned three awards this year: Outstanding Program of the Year, Outstanding New Organization of the Year, and Collaborative Program of the Year. Penn State Women in Business was recognized with the Outstanding Executive Board of the Year award. The organization seeks to increase recruitment and retention of women students in the college and create an environment in which women can come together to discuss personal and professional issues. The Outstanding Student Organization of the Year award was presented to two Smeal organizations: Penn State's chapter of the national business fraternity Delta Sigma Pi and Smeal Student Mentors, an organization of sophomores, juniors, and seniors who assist incoming freshmen with their transition to Penn State. Additionally, Smeal MBA student Chris Thomas was nominated for Outstanding Advisor of the Year. Smeal has more than 30 active student organizations, which offer students the opportunity to enrich their educational experience outside of the classroom.
