J. Randall Woolridge, a professor of finance at Pennsylvania State University, says companies do better once they're sprung from conglomerates. In their first three years, spinoffs outperform the stocks of their peers, are more likely to be bought and post faster sales growth.

''Who can do it better: the people at the top, or the people in the division?'' he says.
