Where State College is located on a Pennsylvania Map

Ranked as the #2 college town in the U.S. by USA Today for academics, quality of life and professional opportunities, and the #3 town for college students by The American Institute for Economic Research, State College is known for being student-centered and accessible. It is a location that appeals to those who have come from an urban setting, a rural setting, or anything in between.

Penn State is a five minute drive from the University Park airport, which allows students, job seekers, corporate partners, and visitors alike very easy access to any city in the world. In addition, in less than half a day's drive, one can find themselves in many of the major cities in the Mid-Atlantic region including, New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington D.C., and Baltimore.

State College has been ranked among the least-stressful communities in the United States by Psychology Today, and as one of the nation's most livable communities by Kiplinger's. State College has a very low crime rate, and is seen as an excellent environment to focus on academic study without urban distractions and challenges.

The region offers excellent opportunities for hiking, biking, golfing, and other outdoor activities. Penn State features one of the nation’s top intercollegiate athletic programs with legions of enthusiastic supporters. The common bond of being a Penn Stater--and being part of the largest alumni network in the world--provides endless opportunity to meet people from all walks of life.

In addition to world class athletic events, many other activities are available here; such as nightlife and shopping on College Avenue, live theater performances and concerts, museums and more. The Center for the Performing Arts and the Bryce Jordan Center regularly host internationally recognized acts (such as Cirque Du Soleil, Bruce Springsteen, Jerry Seinfeld and a variety of Broadway Shows). Our local venues, such as The State Theatre, provide more intimate settings for both local and national entertainment. The community is further brought to life by the many cultural and service organizations that bring together town and gown.
