The ISBM Academic-Practitioner Challenge

Up to $100,000 in Research Grants to be Awarded

An innovation at the 2006 ISBM Academic Conference will be the ISBM Academic Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to help generate and support academic work in the B-to-B domain that meets the following characteristics:

  • Scientific Merit
  • Important for Practitioners

Preliminary Topics/Areas for Consideration

  • Understanding Real Customer Needs
  • Understanding Value Creation
  • Role of Brands in B-to-B
  • Understanding Systems Purchasing in B-to-B
  • ISBM Trends

Preliminary issues will be circulated to the academic community by: March 1, 2006

Proposal Submission

Send E-mail Proposals to isbm.challenge@smeal.psu.edu . Proposals are not to exceed 15 double-spaced pages. Any pages of the abstract and/or proposal (not including reference pages) exceeding the page limits will not be considered in the review process. Proposals are due: June 1, 2006.

The selection committee (including the practitioner panelists plus the ISBM Fellows) will select finalists, who will receive a minimum grant of $10,000.

Selection Criteria

  • The work has to address important, real issues faced by B-to-B practitioners (50%).
  • The proposed work has to be of the highest academic quality (50%).

The grant can be used for research support of any sort, including salary supplements.

Academic Challenge Agenda (August 3, 2006)
1:00 p.m. Plenary Session 1 - (The Practitioner Challenge)
In order to address the dimension of "important for practitioners," Anil Menon, CMO from IBM and several other senior B-to-B marketing panelists will provide the "Challenge" from the perspective of practice: What should academics in B-to-B be working on that would address issues that are of vital importance to practitioners?
3:00 p.m. Plenary Session 2 (the Academic Response).
Finalists (max of three) will present their proposals.
6:00 p.m. The winning proposal and associated grant will be announced during the reception with suitable fanfare.
