Biography
Barton A. Weitz is the J.C. Penney Eminent Scholar Chair and Executive Director of the Center for Retailing Education and Research in the Warrington College of Business Administration at University of Florida. Prior to joining that faculty, he was a professor at the UCLA Graduate School of Management and the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He received a BSEE from MIT and an MBA and Ph.D. from Stanford University.
Dr. Weitz’s research interests focus on long-term relationships between firms in a distribution channel, salespeople and their customers, and firms and their employees. He is also interested in the use of organizational culture, supervision, and incentive compensation to motivate and control salespeople and service providers.
The former Chair of the American Marketing Association Board of Directors and member of the American Marketing Association Foundation, National Retail Federation, and the National Retail Institute boards, Dr. Weitz was editor of the Journal of Marketing Research and is the coeditor of Marketing Letters. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science, Journal of Marketing, and International Journal of Research in Marketing.
Dr. Weitz’s research has been published in leading academic journals, and he received the Paul Root Award in 1998 and the 2005 and 2007 Louis W. Stern awards. Three of his articles were selected among the ten with the greatest impact on personal selling and sales management in the twentieth century. He has coauthored three textbooks and edited the Handbook of Marketing. selected the AMA Educator of the Year in 1996.
