Biography

Dr. Rajan Varadarajan is distinguished professor of marketing and holder of the Ford Chair in Marketing and E-Commerce, Mays Business School at Texas A&M University. His primary teaching and research interest is in the area of marketing strategy. He is author of over seventy refereed journal articles on such topics as marketing and market strategy, competitive advantage, corporate diversification and divestitures, global competitive strategy, market pioneering advantage, multimarket competition, product-market growth strategies, strategic alliances, strategy typologies and taxonomies, interdependencies between corporate, business and marketing strategy, and other topics. He has published his research in the Journal of Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Management Science Sloan Management Review, California Management Review, Business Horizons, Journal of Retailing and other journals, and presented at numerous conferences, consortia, workshops, universities, and other forums.

Dr. Varadarajan served as editor of the Journal of Marketing from 1993 to 1996 and as editor of the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science from 2000 to 2003. He currently serves on the Editorial Review Board of a number of journals including the Journal of Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Interactive Marketing, Journal of International Marketing, Journal of Strategic Marketing, Journal of Marketing Management, and the IIMB Management Review. He served as program co-chair for the 1993 American Marketing Association Marketing Educators’ Conference, the 1998 Academy of Marketing Science Marketing Educators’ Conference, the 1997 American Marketing Association Doctoral Dissertation Competition, the 2001 American Marketing Association Faculty Consortium, and the 2004 American Marketing Association Doctoral Consortium. He also served as president of the Marketing Strategy Special Interest Group of the American Marketing Association (1998 to 2000), Board of Governors of the Academy of Marketing Science (1998 to 2004), and vice president for Publications for the Academy of Marketing Science (2004 to 2007).

Dr. Varadarajan is a recipient of a number of honors and awards including the Academy of Marketing Science Distinguished Marketing Educator Award (2003), American Marketing Association Marketing Strategy Special Interest Group’s Mahajan Award for Career Contributions to Marketing Strategy (2003), Journal of Marketing Best Paper Award (2001), and the Texas A&M University Association of Former Students’ Faculty Distinguished Achievement Award in Research (1994).
