Biography

Jan-Benedict E.M. Steenkamp is the C. Knox Massey Professor of Marketing and marketing area chair at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as well as executive director of AiMark (http://www.aimark.org/) and honorary professor at the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management. He received his degrees from Wageningen University in the Netherlands, graduating summa cum laude. His research focuses on global marketing, the effectiveness of marketing instruments, interorganizational relationships, and marketing research techniques.

Dr. Steenkamp has taught in executive/MBA programs at universities around the world and is academic trustee of the Marketing Science Institute and vice president of publications and fellow of the European Marketing Academy.

He has written or edited four books and more than 100 scholarly publications, including those in Academy of Management Journal, International Journal of Research in Marketing, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, and Marketing Science. He serves on several editorial boards and has been the editor of International Journal of Research in Marketing. Recently, he was ranked 37th of the Global Top 100 most cited scientists in economics and business (the highest ranked marketing scholar). He is currently writing a book on private labels (with Nirmalya Kumar).

His various awards include the Hendrik Muller lifetime award from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences, the Strategic Marketing Association Distinguished Marketing Scholar lifetime award, and several excellence in research awards.
