Student-Managed Investment Fund

Purpose

The Nittany Lion Fund provides Smeal students with an active learning environment where they can put to practice the principles they have learned in the classroom.

The Fund allows students to work in a team-based setting that fosters their learning not only through their individual research but also through the efforts of their peers in consultation with the Oversight and Advisory Boards. Students and faculty collaborate in this informal learning environment, making the education process a unique and interesting experience.

Fund Management and Organizational Structure

This Fund is governed by a Board of Directors, three members of whom are appointed by the Fund Co-Managers. The Board selects a Chief Executive Officer, who oversees the day to day functioning of the Fund. Investment decisions are made by student Fund Managers who are advised by the Oversight Committee and, to a lesser extent, The Advisory Committee. The student Fund Managers make all the portfolio investment decisions, according to the Fund's investment policies. These managers are students of The Smeal College of Business of The Pennsylvania State University and members of the Penn State Investment Association.

Penn State Investment Association

The Penn State Investment Association (PSIA) was founded to provide undergraduate students with a strong foundation in the functioning of capital markets. Through managing the Nittany Lion Fund, PSIA students gain even more knowledge as they experience the responsibility and challenge of managing real investor dollars.

Neither The Pennsylvania State University, the Board of Trustees of The Pennsylvania State University, or the Smeal College of Business has the authority or power to act on behalf of the Fund, to do any act that would be binding on the Fund or to incur any expenditures on behalf of the Fund. Neither The Pennsylvania State University, the Board of Trustees of The Pennsylvania State University, or the Smeal College of Business shall be liable for any debts or obligations of the Fund. The Interests in the Fund are not in any way endorsed or recommended by the Pennsylvania State University, the Smeal College of Business, or the Co-Managers of the Fund. Nor does the Pennsylvania State University, the Smeal College of Business or the Co-Managers guarantee in any way the performance of the Fund, the investment return, or any other aspect of the Fund, including but not limited to, the preservation of the capital so invested.
