With more than 50 percent of executive MBA students nationwide self-funding all or the vast majority of their education, many students are looking for career development and placement services to compliment their executive MBA experience.
The Penn State Smeal Executive MBA Program is proud to be one of the first programs to offer complete access to the college's recruiting services, the same services available to our full-time, on-campus MBA students. This includes access to job listings, recruiter interviews, career planning and counseling, resume and interview assistance, and access to the greater Penn State and Smeal alumni and corporate networks.
Some services are also available to sponsored students as they seek to develop a career plan which includes growth within the sponsoring firm. One example is the Personal Career Strategy (PCS) document which serves as a cornerstone of all of our career services activities.
Personal Career Strategy
Crucial to the success of any business venture is a thoughtful and comprehensive business plan. Similarly, your career success is largely dependent on having a thoughtful and comprehensive plan that will detail your career goals and guide you in achieving these goals. As a Penn State Smeal MBA student, you will develop and refine your own Personal Career Strategy (PCS) with the help of the Career Services Team.
In addition to defining, clarifying, and refining your goals, you will analyze your career goals in the context of the job market, your current firm, as well as your personal strengths and weaknesses. You will develop a gap analysis so you know what it will take to get you where you want to go. And then, you will develop a plan of action to get you there. As you do this, you will have one-on-one coaching from members of the Career Services Team and your executive coach.
During your time in the program, you will complete your PCS; but you will never finalize it. Like all good business plans, it will change over time in response to changes in your personal objectives as well as changes in the marketplace. This tool and training will help launch your post-MBA career and keep it on a steep trajectory for the rest of your professional life.
"My primary goal on entering an MBA program was to gain the educational background to support a mid-career transition from a purely technical engineering role to one with more business-orientation in financial analysis. In that aspect, the Smeal Executive MBA Program was a complete success, helping me obtain a new career a month after graduating from the program."
