Message from the President of the Minority MBA Alumni Interest Group

Greetings Smeal alumni & friends –

Thank you to all who attended this year’s Diversity Appreciation Weekend (DAW). It was a pivotal event for a couple of reasons. For one, I accepted the challenge to serve as the new President of the Minority MBA Alumni Interest Group. That gives you some perspective on this message from me…

But more importantly, we celebrated 25 years of Smeal’s commitment to fostering diverse perspectives within the MBA Program. We were also challenged by long-time friends and champions, Harvey & Virginia Kimmel – if we met the attendance goal they set, they would match their usual generous contribution with additional funds. And while we were unable to take advantage their generous matching contribution, we did see a really strong turnout and a wonderful time was had by all, current and prospective students, alumni, guests and staff. A special shout-out to those alumni that made contributions to the MBA Diversity Fund…

And last, but certainly not least, Dr. V has officially passed the torch to us for carrying forward the DAW. In the spirit of succession planning, we’re now up at bat. So we will really have to step up to the plate.

We must each do our part to support the program that has given us so much, during our time at Penn State, through the friendships forged, and opportunities gained. We will have to “be” Dr. V - - get creative in locating funding sources, use whatever means possible to drive attendance (even a friendly  “guilt trip” now and then), and identify future students among family, friend, and colleagues.  Think about the ways in which we influence and drive change in our professional lives. Let’s bring the same energy to our Smeal family.

We will be working closely with current students to improve electronic communications - - we’re looking at an online networking solution to better connect us all. But in the meantime, please feel free to contact me with any ideas and feedback.

Sincerely,

Dara Herring
