Center for Sports Business & Research

Penn State University has one of the largest, best-known, and successful athletic programs in the United States and the University’s Smeal College of Business offers research, career development, access to internships, programming, and academic training for students interested in the business of sports.

The CSBR focuses its research efforts on the demand side of sports relating to the fan. We involve undergraduate, MBA, and Ph. D. students in some of our research efforts for those involved with the more technical side of sports. In addition, we partner with many colleagues within Smeal, Communications, Law, Kinesiology, etc. in this effort.

Three on-campus internships programs offer students a chance to work for the Penn State Athletic Department, Penn State Sports Properties and the State College Spikes, the Single A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals; all are located in the university athletic village a few blocks from the Business Building. Legendary Beaver Stadium, the nation’s 2nd largest outdoor sports setting, the 16,000-seat Bryce Jordan Center, the new $21 million dollar baseball complex, and a wide array other facilities and programs hosting 29 NCAA team sports are among the experiential learning settings for students.

Penn State boasts a large network of alumni and other partners at all levels of the $485 billion USA sports business from the upper ranks of professional sports throughout a wide range of teams, leagues, media outlets, and companies using sports to support their business models. Members of this network are frequent guest speakers, lecturers, and panelists in both classes and other programs hosted by the Smeal College of Business. Sports-related programming also involves collaboration with the Penn State College of Communications John Curley Center for Sports Journalism and the Penn State Law's Institute for Sports Law, Policy, and Research.
