Lectures and executive interaction are key elements of the learning process at the Smeal College of Business. Series at the college include:
The program brings high-profile business leaders to the college to connect with students, faculty, and administrators. Guests are asked how they would like to spend their time at Smeal. We then build a personalized itinerary that includes a moderated discussion in the Business Building Auditorium.
Advance Realty Group Real Estate Lecture Series
The Advance Realty lectureship was established in 2004 to recognize the generosity of Peter '73 and Sharon Cocoziello and to provide a platform at Smeal for leading real estate professionals to discuss the issues facing the field.
Melvin Jacobs Retail Leadership Lecture Series
The lecture series is named in tribute to Melvin Jacobs, a 1947 graduate of Penn State and former chairman and CEO of Saks Fifth Avenue who died in 1993. Jacobs' wife, Rosalind "Roz" Jacobs, and daughter, Peggy Jacobs, established an endowment to support lectures by outstanding leaders and chief executives who are shaping the future of the retail industry. Previous lectures in the series have featured Arthur C. Martinez, retired Sears' chairman and CEO, and Leonard Lauder, chairman of The Estée Lauder Companies.
G. Albert Shoemaker Program in Business Ethics
Established in 1985 through a $100,000 gift from the late G. Albert Shoemaker and his wife, Mercedes, the centerpiece of the program is the Shoemaker Lecture, which brings together faculty members, students, and members of the business community to consider current perspectives in business ethics. The Shoemaker Program also supports scholarly research in business ethics and a series of publications based on the Shoemaker Lecture.
At the close of each semester, Smeal College of Business students conclude their Penn State careers with the time-honored commencement ceremony. Each event brings with it a new distinguished speaker from the business world to deliver the commencement address.
