Interview with Julie McHugh, '86 Finance

What do you feel is most rewarding about working in the pharmaceutical field?

It’s rewarding to know that the work we’re doing directly impacts the quality of people’s lives. We’re helping those in need to feel better and move on with their lives.

What is your proudest professional achievement?

To date, it was the success we had with Centocor, Inc. in launching Remicade -- a drug which is used to treat a number of autoimmune disorders, such as Crohn’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Remicade has had a profound impact on a number of people.

How have you stayed in touch with Smeal since you graduated?

I’ve been involved with the Smeal College in a number of different ways as an alumnus. I represented Johnson & Johnson at Smeal’s Executive Insights Program, and I’ve been active with the Board of Visitors for the past two and a half years.

What do you see as the most significant area of growth or change at Smeal since you graduated?

A lot has changed since then, even the name Smeal. The Business Building is obviously an important addition to Smeal. Also, there has been a lot of change to the curriculum in terms of providing a global focus. It’s still the sound business school I went to, just with a more dynamic global vision.

What is your favorite Penn State memory?

It would have to be the two national championship football games we had in ‘82 and ‘86. I remember they tore down the goalposts and carried them down the street -- don’t think they’d let the students get away with that now.
