Interview with Mike Cocco, '05 Economics
What has been the most important growth and change at Smeal since you graduated?
In my opinion, the new Smeal Business Building is an easy choice. Now Smeal has a top-of-the-line physical structure to compliment its already top-of-the-line faculty, administration, and curriculum. The addition of Dean Thomas to lead this next phase of Smeal has also been a great move that has paid great dividends for the respect our College receives throughout the world.
What has been your favorite Penn State memory?
My favorite Penn State memory is when I had the honor and privilege to be on the THON Overall Committee in 2005 and was able to raise one of the numbers on the stage the first time THON broke $4 million mark. That year and the relationships I have formed with the families of the Four Diamonds Fund are priceless. Also, as an added bonus, it was through THON where I met my wonderful wife Katie.
What is your favorite hobby?
My favorite hobby is sports, sports, and more sports. From playing them with my friends to following our beloved Penn State Nittany Lions football, basketball, etc. I am an official sports junkie.
What is your favorite thing to do on a beautiful summer day?
Without question, on a beautiful summer day, I'd love to be on the beach or "down the shore" as we call it when you grow up in New Jersey. The shore is a one-of-a-kind place where I can truly relax with my family and not have a care in the world.
What is the biggest reason for you to return to campus?
That is a tough one, so I'll cheat at that question and answer simply to continue to feel like a student. From still volunteering for THON by serving on the Board of the Four Diamonds Fund to coming back as a volunteer on the Smeal Alumni Board to, of course, attending at least a few football games a year; I still without question have my opportunities to get back. Also, I keep a good piece of Penn State with me in New Jersey by having the honor to serve as president of the Northern New Jersey chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association, and routinely organizing events and gatherings in my home state.
