August 2013 letter from the dean

August 2013:

Dear Smeal College Alumni and Friends,

Greetings from University Park and the Smeal College of Business! Campus is buzzing with activity as we launch into the fall semester.

Every time new students arrive on campus, I am reminded of how much responsibility we all have to help them achieve their goals. Our faculty and staff are committed to providing the best possible educational experience—one that will provide our students with everything they need to complete their degrees, confidently enter the job market, and begin the process of building a rewarding career. You—our alumni network—play an important role in that process too. Your involvement with recruiting and mentoring, your willingness to network with and hire Smeal graduates, and your generous philanthropy contribute to positive change at Smeal and across the University.

Last year brought an amazing outpouring of support for the college and a record year for fundraising. Through the generosity of alumni and friends, the college will be feeling the impact of more than $19 million in new commitments. These include gifts to create more than 35 new scholarship endowments, a landmark commitment that will support the diversity of our student body, a generous response from alumni to the ongoing Rogers Trading Room Challenge, and a future gift that will help to transform the Sapphire Leadership Program. Funds to support research and create new faculty endowments, including a new faculty chair, a new professorship, and three early career professorships, will keep our college at the forefront of business schools nationwide.

To read about how philanthropy is shaping the student experience at Smeal, please read about how one student is benefiting from a scholarship award, the positive impact of several gifts on the Department of Management and Organization, and the support our Trading Room has received. As we enter the final year of For the Future: the Campaign for Penn State Students, many opportunities remain to make a difference for today’s aspiring business leaders and those who follow.

I encourage you to connect with us and with each other. Stay up-to-date on upcoming events through our website and social media channels. Also, if you’d like to get involved, there are many ways to do so. We look forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,
Charles H. Whiteman
